I then tried a diiferent tack: In AP Mode Setup for the WAP54g, I decided to see if the 'AP Client' mode would work. To test this mode I used a laptop directly wired to the network connector on the back of the access point. I used the site survey button to 'discover' the MAC address of my router (this is probably not required as I already knew the address). After the access point rebooted, the WRT54g actually successfully got an IP address by DHCP.
I then switched the AP Mode to 'Wireless Repeater.' After the access point rebooted again, I unplugged the network cable on the back of the WAP54g and activated wireless networking on my laptop. Again, the router assgned an IP address for the wireless connection. A couple last comments. If you are using MAC address filtering, make sure the access point's MAC is in the router's table and the router's MAC is in the access point's. I'm not 100% certain that this is a requirement, but it may be with the latest firmware. Also, if the above procedure doesn't work on the first try, go through it again. The second time I tried it, the font color changed to blue and communication between the two worked. Bravo Sir, after several hours at a clients house not understanding why repeater wouldnt work (after ive set up dozens of repeating wireless networks over the years) i took it to my office to fiddle with it, and after reading your post and trying your method i also got a red mac address in 'AP Client' mode. It wouldnt change from red, but after restarting the AP a couple times and surveying/save a couple times, i finally switched to repeater, restarted the WRT54G and whalla, the 'AP client mode' worked! But when I disconnected the cable, this was lost and the 'link' light on the WAP was off. Is this an IP address problem? I tried entering both the WRT LAN MAC address and the WRT wireless MAC address in the wireless repeater function, and I also added the WAP MAC address to the WRT MAC filter. I want to try your trick. Where do I find the 'site survey' button you refer to? And how do I reboot the WAP? Unplug and replug? Any help would be great. One Linksys chat operator told me I could only configure as wireless repeater if I had 2 WAPS (one wired to WRT and the other wireless). Then another operator today told me I can do it with just one. I'm a little confused from wncpc's post concerning the MAC addresses. When you did the 'AP client survey', which MAC address was identified, the wireless or non-wireless MAC. When you switch over to wireless repeater mode from AP client, which MAC address is allowing the wireless repeater function to work for you?
